22 students injured in varsity terror scare

22 students at Moi University Eldoret were on Wednesday morning injured following a terror scare in one of the students' hostel.

According to a press statement by the University, an explosion caused by an electric fault in hostel D elicited anxiety among the students, as those who were in the adjacent hostels thought they were under attack after one of the student's shouted “Al-Shabaab”.

The alarm prompted students to jump from the windows in an attempt to save their lives.

“An electric fault in students’ Hostel D at Moi University Main Campus at 5:40am on Wednesday March 23, 2016 caused panic among students, prompting some to jump through the windows.

"Students in the neighbouring Hostel G, unaware of the electric fault, thought the University had been attacked after one student shouted, “Al-Shabaab”, raising fear among the rest of the students,” the statement by Moi University reads in part.

The institution indicated that 11 students were referred to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret town for x-ray and further diagnosis, while the rest were treated at the University's dispensary and discharged.

Moi University noted that the electric fault was due to tapping of electricity by students from one room to another.

The incident follows a separate one at Strathmore University, where students were seriously injured and one staffer died during a terrorist attack drill in November last year.
